Geometry includes the mathematics of
shapes and logical thinking. This
course will cover the basics of geometric concepts with a focus on problem solving
and inductive reasoning. Our
textbook will be Discovering Geometry.
Mathematics is a challenging
subject. One topic builds on
another. Daily participation is a
must. Do not get behind in your
course work. Attendance is
mandatory. Many assignments,
projects, and even tests and quizzes are done in a group; that doesn’t work if
you are not in class. The school
has accepted rules and procedures for dealing with absences.
Grades are determined as follows:
Midterm and Final 20%
Tests 35%
Quizzes 20%
Assignments & Projects
15%
Group Participation & other
stuff 10%
Geometry is a demanding college preparatory math course and requires (give or
take) 45 minutes of homework each night.
Often you will be given class time at the beginning or at the end (or
both) of the class period to work in groups and discuss a lesson. What you do not finish in class becomes
homework. Problems that are
assigned have answers that either appear in the Hints section of Discovering Geometry or will be provided
the next day. If you found you’ve
made an error, rework the problem until you get the correct answer. By doing so you will discover errors
before they become bad habits.
Homework is the place for you to learn from your mistakes.
If a quiz or a test is missed because
of an excused absence, it is your responsibility to see me (within two days of your
returning to class) and set a date for a make-up test or quiz (within one week
of your returning to class). If
the test or quiz is not made up within that time, you may receive a failing
grade for that test or quiz.
You must have a binder. Divide the binder into six sections:
1)
Information
2)
Classwork (Daily Notes/Investigations, Example Problems,
Computer labs)
3)
Assignments (Homework, Journals)
4)
Definitions and Conjectures
5)
Tests and Quizzes
6)
Journals, Projects, and Other Stuff
Your binder must be in order for me to
grade it.
You must be prepared for class by
bringing the following materials every day:
a)
Binder
b)
Textbook
c)
TI-83 or higher Graphing Calculator
d)
Pencil
All the materials listed above must be
with you in class and at home when you are doing homework. You must have your own set of quality
geometry tools for home:
compass, protractor and straightedge/ruler that measures in both
standard and metric units. You
cannot learn if you are not prepared.
While I am speaking to the class, I
expect you to listen and not to speak.
When I am not addressing the class, you are free to move around as
necessary ( to sharpen pencils, get materials, and so forth). When working in groups I expect you to
to behave according to the norms of cooperative behavior. You are not to leave the room without
my permission and pass.
I am available for help during morning
block and during x block; except when I have meetings. I am often in my room before morning block
as well. Help can also be received
by appointment.
